Summer 2019 Computational Research Enrichment Program

I really learned a lot through this program that I never thought I would be interested in. I enjoyed the application of coding into real life science and learning how it could be used for research.

Students delve into the world of computational scientific research in this 1-week academic enrichment program. This program prepares students for scientific research using code and is based on the skills needed to do research as an undergraduate student working with professors at a university.

Days 1-3: Fundamentals

We introduce the scientific programming language Python and its use in creating simulations of biological, chemical, and physical systems. We will cover loop structure and coding logic in the context of real-world science problems, such as how viruses spread amongst people and how molecules move within the cell.

Days 4-5: Inquiry Project

Students want something they can take home - something to be proud of and uniquely their own. In days 4-5 students will become researchers and form questions about a system of interest. Under the guidance of our instructors, students will develop code in Python to explore their question through the scientific method. That is, they will learn how to formulate a hypothesis, make computational-based tests to refine their hypothesis, and interpret and report on their experimental findings.

It’s incredible how much you can walk away with after just one week!
Yes, it is frustrating at times, but you can really go from zero knowledge of computer programming to feeling quite comfortable and competent! That’s the benefit of fully immersing yourself in a language for a week.

Eligibility

People ages 14+. No prior coding experience is required. All instruction and group work is in English therefore fluency in spoken English is required for success.

Accessibility & Accommodations

Studio B is wheel-chair accessible and there are accessible washrooms on site.

Our instructors do not have training in special education or administration of medications; however, we will work with you to discuss accommodations and options for extra support.

We reserve the right to decline participation in our programs if we feel unable to provide a safe and productive environment for you, our staff, and other students.

Location & Time

The program runs 10AM-4PM from Monday August 12 to Friday August 16 in Studio B at the Evergreen Cultural Centre, located just beside the Lafarge-Douglas Skytrain station in Coquitlam.

What to bring

Students are responsible for bringing their own laptop each day. We also expect all students to arrive well rested and equipped with a positive mindset to take on new challenges.

What’s provided

Lunch will be provided each day. We select our menu from the numerous local catering options in Coquitlam. We’ll do our best to find options suitable for all diets.
